Technique:
These artworks will be created on wooden boards, prepared with plaster and glue in accordance with ancient traditions. A series of drawings will be imprinted on these boards using oil pigments, a technique reminiscent of the methods employed in the creation of museum forgeries.
Concept of the artwork:
This series emerges from a collaboration between Flemish painters from bygone eras and pre-school children. Separated by centuries of history and skill, their two different styles intertwine in this unexpected pairing.
On the one hand, we encounter the unique colours and marks reminiscent of Flemish painters who created masterpieces, often taking months or even years to complete. This prolonged duration was due to the distinctive glazing technique employed, a meticulous process that demanded both time and skill. Using brushes fashioned from a limited number of animal hair fibres, artists painstakingly layered paint. The final result was a collection of highly detailed and complex ‘frames’ of life (specifically, this series depicts scenes from otherworldly realms).
On the other hand, as if in a swift regression to a more primitive state, we encounter those tasked with unravelling these scenes. Much like the erosion and scratching of an ultra-fine surface, this role is entrusted to children. Unaware of the material they are handling and the aesthetic composition they are unwittingly creating, they possess a remarkable ability to imprint and express with the energetic frenzy of the ‘present moment’. In doing so, they tap into a language shared by all human beings that transcends the divisions of languages, cultures, and environmental conditions.
Studies conducted by various pedagogists on children’s sign language, followed by the cataloguing of drawings created by children in different developmental stages from their early years onward, reveal a noticeable difference between the initial signs and drawings by preschool children and those by children that have received an education.
A strong energetic component radiates from each creation crafted by young authors often in less than a minute, a quality that is usually absent in drawings by children who have commenced formal schooling.
This combination of contrasting timeframes and techniques renders each creation by these mysterious and indecipherable authors suspended in an undefined time.
